Parasitism of Nyctemera amica (White) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) and Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) by Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

The parasitoid, Cotesia plutellae, is used as a biological control agent for diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, in many countries and has been evaluated as a candidate for release in New Zealand. C. plutellae was originally released in Australia in 1951, but is rarely found. A glasshouse host specificity trial was conducted in Australia to assess whether C. plutellae would parasitise Nyctem...

Comparison of Diadegma insulare (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Microplitis plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) as biological control agents of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae): field parasitism, insecticide susceptibility, and host-searching.

Parasitism of Plutella xylostella (L.) third and fourth instars was evaluated in a cabbage field in Geneva, NY, in 1999. Over the entire season, average parasitism was 33.6% for third instars and 53.6% for fourth instars, and the main parasitoids were Diadegma insulare (Cresson) and Microplitis plutellae Muesbeck. In the early season, total parasitism was low, and mainly caused by D. insulare. ...

Immune system challenge in a host-parasitoid-pathogen system: interaction between Cotesia plutellae (Hym.: Braconidae) and Bacillus thuringiensis influences parasitism and phenoloxidase cascade of Plutella xylostella (Lep.: Plutellidae)

Characterization of two genes of Cotesia vestalis polydnavirus and their expression patterns in the host Plutella xylostella.

Cotesia vestalis is an endoparasitoid of larval stages of Plutella xylostella, the diamondback moth. For successful parasitization, this parasitoid injects a polydnavirus into its host during oviposition. Here we isolated two genes, which we named CvBV1 and CvBV2. CvBV1 was located on segment CvBV-S5 with a size of 790 bp, while CvBV2 was located on segment CvBV-S51 with a size of 459 bp. A gen...

Effects of Bt plants on the development and survival of the parasitoid Cotesia plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in susceptible and Bt-resistant larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

A range of crops have been transformed with delta-endotoxin genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to produce transgenic plants with high levels of resistance to lepidopteran pests. Parasitoids are important natural enemies of lepidopteran larvae and the effects of Bt plants on these non-target insects have to be investigated to avoid unnecessary disruption of biological control. This study inv...
